Congregation Shir Chadash is at once one of the oldest and newest synagogues serving the Greater
Long Beach/West Orange County Jewish community. After more than fifty years as a Conservative
synagogue, in 2006 the congregation decided to chart a new direction as an independent synagogue. With
this new direction came a new name – Congregation Shir Chadash, “a new song”!
In Preparation For Passover
FEED THE HUNGRY and FEED YOUR SOUL!
Prior to Pesach, many Jews remove all items from their homes which contain chametz (leavening). Frequently people will utilize a Jewish legal practice whereby they (temporarily) “sell” their chametzdik items to a friend or neighbor who isn’t Jewish, thus removing it from their possession until after Pesach, when they then “buy it back.” While this is a perfectly appropriate practice, we would like to urge you to make a change this year. And you’ll feel really good in the process.
Instead of “selling” your chametz, why don’t you give it to someone who can’t afford to buy food? In our synagogue’s FEED THE HUNGRY and FEED YOUR SOUL program, you can either bring your chametzdik food items to CSC and place it in our Food Donation Box, or you can call Mark Hardy at 562.595.9250 and he will pick it up from your home. We will then take the food to the Broken Loaf Food Pantry in Lakewood, where it will be distributed to those in need.
What a wonderful way to fulfill a double mitzvah! You can be kosher for Passover AND help to feed the hungry, all at one time! Think how nurturing that will feel to your neshamah (soul). You can participate up until March 25th, when we will remove all of the chametz from the synagogue. So remember to FEED THE HUNGRY and FEED YOUR SOUL!
Worship
Congregation Shir Chadash offers various styles of worship. We conduct progressive Friday evening Shabbat services, combining both traditional and modern prayers in a warm, intimate atmosphere full of song. These include a Twilight Shabbat service and a Family Shabbat service.
Our Shabbat morning services are quite traditional, with a great deal of singing and soulful davvening. There are also minyan services on Sunday and Thursday mornings.
During the summer the congregation periodically meets at El Dorado Park for Shabbes on the Green. On the High Holy Days, both creative and traditional services are offered.
Please see our calendar for a schedule of upcoming services and events.
