The Kaplan School of Jewish Learning
at Congregation Shir Chadash
Our Kaplan School of Jewish Learning provides a focused religious education designed to provide our students with the various Jewish competencies they will need to function as contemporary Jews. Classes are held Sunday mornings, from 9:30 a.m.-Noon, and Wednesday afternoons, from 4:00--6:00 p.m. Each Sunday morning school ends with a rousing song session conducted by Rabbi Laibson.
Our enrollment is small and intimate, with students from multiple grade levels in public school learning together in kitot (classrooms) geared to their level of maturity and comprehension. Roughly speaking , this means that First and Second graders are grouped together, as are Third and Fourth graders, and so on.
Because our classes are small, we are able to nurture our students attentively as they develop their Hebrew reading skills and broaden their awareness of Jewish history, religious practices, Jewish values and ideals.
Serving as a background to our curriculum is a list of Jewish Competencies that each student who completes our full religious education program will master. These include such items as "Recite the blessing over bread" and "Select several Jewish heroes and explain why they were important personalities" and "Explain how you understand God's role in your life."
Enrichment programs are held roughly every other month and include Chugim (a variety or arts projects around a central theme), field trips (to places such as the Skirball Museum and Jewish Los Angeles: The Fairfax Area), as well as holiday-oriented Family Education Days.
The students of the Kaplan School of Jewish Learning come to see themselves as part of a community of children and families, who become significant people in one another's lives.
The Kaplan School of Jewish Learning is tuition-free for the children of synagogue members. Please contact us for more information about enrolling your child.
